The cutoff: why a BQ is not always enough

Boston has a limited field. When more people qualify than there are places, the B.A.A. accepts applicants fastest-first relative to their own age-group standard. The difference between the standard and the slowest accepted time is the cutoff:

5:17needed under standard for 2027
4:34needed under standard for 2026

So for the 2027 race, a runner in the men’s 18–34 group needed about 2:49:43 or faster to be accepted, despite a standard of 2:55:00. Many runners now aim for a cushion of 6–8 minutes to feel safe.

Pace needed per km: standard vs standard minus 6 minutes (men)
A 6-minute cushion means running roughly 8–9 seconds per km faster than the bare standard pace.

How to run a BQ

  1. Pick a fast, certified course in cool weather — and one inside the qualifying window. The course must be certified and the race must meet the B.A.A.’s qualifying rules, so check eligibility before you commit.
  2. Train for your cushion, not the standard. Use the race time predictor with a recent half marathon: you want it to predict comfortably under your target.
  3. Pace evenly. Build a plan with the marathon pace calculator and print a pace band.
  4. Fuel well. Many BQ attempts are lost after 30 km; plan gels with the race fueling calculator.

FAQ

Boston Qualifying questions

For the 2027 race the B.A.A. standards start at 2:55:00 for men and 3:25:00 for women and non-binary athletes aged 18–34, increasing with age to 4:50:00 and 5:20:00 for the 80+ age group. The full table is on this page.

Because more runners qualify than there are places, qualifiers are accepted fastest-first relative to their standard. For the 2026 race runners needed to be 4:34 under their standard, and for 2027 the cutoff was 5:17.

Your age on the day of the Boston Marathon you are applying for, not your age on the day you ran your qualifier.

Divide your standard by 42.195 km or 26.219 miles. A 3:00:00 standard needs 4:16 per km (6:52 per mile) — and a little faster if you want a safe cushion under the cutoff.
