NCAA Indoor Track Conversion Calculator

Convert indoor times between undersized, flat and banked/oversized tracks with the official NCAA facility indexing factors — men and women, 200 m to 5000 m and relays.

Convert an indoor mark

Times in m:ss.hh (e.g. 1:52.40) or seconds (e.g. 48.71).

How NCAA indoor conversions work

The NCAA Indoor Track Facility Indexing Conversion Summary gives one multiplier per event, sex and track type. In the NCAA’s words, “actual times in seconds should be multiplied by the number in the chart for that event and track type to the desired track type, and then converted back from seconds if applicable.”

converted time = time in seconds × factor (from-track → to-track)

NCAA rules define the standard indoor track as 200 m. A track is flat if its lateral inclination is no more than 0.1 %; any steeper track counts as banked. Banked and oversized tracks share one category, and NCAA qualifying lists are built on banked/oversized times.

Source: NCAA Indoor Track Facility Indexing Conversion Summary (2012). * Rows marked with an asterisk appear only in the USTFCCCA copy of the NCAA charts; the NCAA document notes that 500 m and 600 m conversions “can be easily established for use within conferences”. Reverse conversions (to undersized) use the reciprocal of the published factor.

Worked example

A man runs 48.50 for 400 m on a flat track. Flat → banked factor 0.9843: 48.50 × 0.9843 = 47.739, rounded up to 47.74 banked equivalent. A woman runs 2:10.00 (130.00 s) for 800 m on an undersized track: undersized → banked factor 0.9838 gives 127.894 s, rounded up to 2:07.90.

No altitude adjustment. The NCAA facility document covers track size and banking only. This calculator does not apply altitude conversions.

FAQ

NCAA Track Conversion questions

The NCAA publishes a factor for each event, sex and track type. Multiply the time in seconds by the factor for converting from your track type to the target type, then convert back to minutes and seconds.

NCAA rules define a flat track as one with no more than 0.1 % lateral inclination; any steeper track is banked. The standard indoor track is 200 m, so ‘oversized’ tracks are longer than 200 m and ‘undersized’ tracks shorter. Banked and oversized tracks share one conversion category.

Tight turns on a flat 200 m track slow runners down, so qualifying lists convert flat-track times to their banked equivalent, which are slightly faster (for example ×0.9843 for the men’s 400 m).
