Hand Time to FAT Converter

Convert hand-timed track marks to fully automatic timing (FAT) using the NFHS rule (+0.24 s after rounding up) or the World Athletics scoring-table guidance, plus yards-to-metres adjustments.

Convert a hand time

Enter the hand time as read from the stopwatch.

The two common rules

NFHS (US high school)

“Hand-held times must be rounded up before adding a conversion. The conversion factor of .24 seconds … must be used (MT + .24 = FAT).” Applied to all events.

World Athletics scoring tables

Add 0.24 s for sprints and hurdles up to 200 m, and 0.14 s for 300 m, 400 m and 400 m hurdles. Hand times are not valid for records.

This calculator rounds the hand time up to the next tenth (hand times are normally recorded in tenths) before adding the correction.

Why hand times are faster

A timer reacts to the flash or smoke of the gun a fraction of a second after it fires, but stops the watch in anticipation of the runner crossing the line. Both errors make the hand time shorter than the true time, which is why a correction is added.

FAQ

Hand Time to FAT questions

Under the NFHS (US high school) rule, round the hand time up, then add 0.24 seconds. A hand-timed 11.3 becomes 11.54 FAT.

Timers start their watches slightly after seeing the smoke or flash of the gun, while FAT starts automatically with the gun. The delay makes hand times look faster, so a correction is added.

The IAAF/World Athletics scoring tables add 0.24 s for sprints and hurdles up to 200 m and 0.14 s for 300 m, 400 m and the 400 m hurdles. Hand times are not accepted for records.

NFHS applies +0.24 to all events. World Athletics scoring guidance covers events up to 400 m; for longer races the difference is usually ignored.
