Good Running Times by Age

What is a good mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon time for your age? See the times for each performance level, from the official 2025 WMA/USATF age standards.

What counts as a “good” running time?

Search for “average 5K time” and you will find wildly different numbers, because averages depend on who happens to enter a given race. A more useful benchmark is age grading: comparing a time with the best performance expected for someone of the same age and sex. This page uses the 2025 road running age standards (Alan Jones, approved by the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council) and the World Masters Athletics performance levels:

Age gradeLevelIn plain terms
50 %RecreationalA regular runner finishing comfortably mid-pack.
60 %Local classA good club runner; often a “good time” for your age.
70 %Regional classRegularly places in age groups.
80 %National classCompetitive at national age-group level.
90 %World classAmong the best in the world for that age.

The same level of performance takes longer as you age — gently through the 40s and 50s, then more steeply after about 70.

How to use these tables

  • Set a realistic goal: moving up one level (for example 60 % to 70 %) is a big but achievable target for a committed runner over a season or two.
  • Compare distances: if your 5K is at 65 % but your marathon is at 55 %, endurance — not speed — is your limiter.
  • Keep improving as you age: your raw times may slow, but your age-graded level can still rise.

Get your exact percentage for any distance with the age grading calculator, then find the training paces to reach your next level with the VDOT calculator.

FAQ

Times by Age questions

Using the 2025 WMA age standards, a ‘local class’ 5K (60 % age grade) is about 21:22 for a 30-year-old man and 23:15 for a 30-year-old woman, rising to about 26:27 and 30:23 at age 60. The tables on this page give times for every age and level.

Published ‘average’ race times depend heavily on who enters a particular race and change from year to year. Age-grading standards measure performance against the best possible for each age and sex, which gives a stable, fair benchmark.

The World Masters Athletics levels are: 60 % local class, 70 % regional class, 80 % national class, 90 % world class and 100 % approximately world-record level for that age.

The age standards change very little until the mid-30s, then slow gradually through the 40s and 50s and more steeply after about 70. Consistent training can keep your age-graded score rising even as your raw times slow.
