Instead of an “average” that depends on who happens to race, these times come from the 2025 road running age standards used for age grading. Each level is a percentage of the best performance expected at your age.

How to move up a level

  • Run more, mostly easy: gradually increasing weekly volume is the most reliable way to improve at any age — see the weekly mileage calculator.
  • Add one quality session a week: threshold or interval work at paces from the VDOT calculator.
  • Keep strength training: from your mid-40s onward, strength and plyometric work help preserve the muscle power that fades with age.
  • Race to measure progress: a race every 6–8 weeks shows whether your age-graded level is rising.

About these numbers. Age standards are based on the best known performances at each age, and the percentage levels follow the World Masters Athletics grading bands. They describe performance quality, not the average of all runners.

5K times at age 80: questions

Based on the 2025 WMA age standards, a ‘local class’ (60 % age-graded) 5K for a 80-year-old man is about 34:30, and a solid recreational (50 %) time is about 41:24. Regional class (70 %) is about 29:34.

For a 80-year-old woman, local class (60 %) is about 41:05, recreational (50 %) about 49:18, and regional class (70 %) about 35:13.

The 2025 age standard — roughly world-record level for the age — is 20:42 for men and 24:39 for women aged 80.

Divide the age standard by your finish time and multiply by 100. For example, a 80-year-old man running 37:38 scores 55 %. Our age grading calculator does this for any distance.
