What counts as a flight?

There is no single standard. Residential flights between floors typically have 12–16 steps and commercial ones 16–20. Fitness trackers count one “floor” for about 3 m (10 ft) of elevation gained, detected by a barometer, regardless of the number of steps.

Calories climbing stairs

The Compendium of Physical Activities lists stair climbing at about 4 METs at a slow pace and 8.8 METs at a fast pace, compared with about 3.5 METs for walking at 3 mph. Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × hours.

Build up gradually. Stair climbing is hard on the calves, quads and knees. Start with a few flights, use the handrail for balance, and add more over weeks.

Stair climbing ranges from moderate to vigorous: the Compendium of Physical Activities lists about 4 METs at a slow pace and 8.8 METs at a fast pace. A 70 kg person climbing briskly for 10 minutes burns roughly 100 kcal.

Minute for minute, climbing stairs uses about 1.1–2.5 times the energy of walking at 3 mph, and it also builds leg strength.

Yes — each stair is a step for a pedometer. Many trackers also count floors separately from altitude changes.
