USTFCCCA standardized conversion factors

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association publishes one factor per pair of events — the same for men and women for every conversion on this page: “Take the competitor’s total time in seconds and multiply by the factor shown. Always round up the last digit of the final time.”

Why 1500 → mile is × 1.08, not just the extra distance

The mile is 109.34 m longer than 1500 m — about 7.3 % further. The factor is 8 % because you also have to hold the pace for longer, so the converted time includes a little extra slowdown. By contrast, 1600 m → mile (× 1.0058) covers only 9.34 m and almost no extra fatigue.

FAQ

1600 to Mile questions

Multiply the 1600 m time in seconds by 1.0058 (the USTFCCCA factor). A 5:00.00 1600 m converts to about 5:01.74 for the mile. The mile is 9.34 m longer than 1600 m.

Multiply by 1.08. A 4:00 1500 m converts to about 4:19.2 for the mile. This factor includes the extra fatigue of the longer race, not just the extra distance.

No — 2 miles is 3218.69 m, 18.69 m longer. Multiply a 3200 m time by 1.0058 to estimate the 2-mile time.

The USTFCCCA instructions say to always round up the last digit of the converted time, so conversions never flatter an athlete.
