Fitness Age Calculator (VO2max)

Turn your VO2max — from a Garmin, Apple Watch, lab test or race — into a fitness age and a percentile for your age and sex, using FRIEND registry reference values.

Your VO2max

Don’t know it? Estimate it from a race with the VO2max calculator or the Cooper test.

How fitness age is calculated here

This calculator compares your VO2max with the median (50th percentile) treadmill VO2max of people of your sex at each age in the FRIEND registry (Kaminsky et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2015). Your fitness age is the age at which your value would be the typical value, interpolated between decade mid-points (25, 35 … 75).

Not the NTNU calculator. The Norwegian NTNU (CERG) fitness-age calculator uses a different model built from the HUNT study, so its results will differ. Fitness ages below 25 or above 75 are shown as “under 25” or “over 75”.

Why it matters

Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health in large population studies. The encouraging part is that VO2max responds to training at every age: a mix of easy aerobic running and some harder intervals can raise it by several ml/kg/min, which can lower your fitness age by years.

FAQ

Fitness Age questions

Fitness age compares your aerobic fitness (VO2max) with the typical value for people of your sex at each age. If your VO2max matches the average 35-year-old, your fitness age is about 35, whatever your actual age.

It uses the FRIEND registry treadmill reference values (Kaminsky et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2015), which list VO2max percentiles by age decade for men and women. It is not the NTNU (CERG) fitness age calculator, which uses a different model.

Watch estimates are usually within a few ml/kg/min for runners but can be off for some people. The trend over time is more useful than any single reading.

Regular aerobic training — a mix of easy running and some harder intervals — raises VO2max at any age. Even a few ml/kg/min can lower your fitness age by several years.
