How the calculator works

time = distance ÷ speed
steps ≈ distance ÷ step length (height × 0.414)
kcal (ACSM) = (0.1 × speed in m/min + 3.5) × kg ÷ 1000 × 5 × minutes

The ACSM walking equation is valid for walking speeds of roughly 50–100 m per minute (1.9–3.7 mph) on flat ground; hills add a lot — see the incline walking calculator. Steps use the common height-based estimate also used by our steps to km calculator.
