Where the factor comes from
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) publishes standardized event conversion factors used by coaches and meet entry systems: “Take the competitor’s total time in seconds and multiply by the factor shown. Always round up the last digit of the final time.” The Mile → 1600m factor is 0.9942.
